about

Our first Album as Elk Run & Riot.

Choosing songs was difficult for 'Both Sides of the Valley' because we had so many songs to choose from. We were writing so prolifically that it was hard to keep track. Ryan and Bailey had set the foundation for Elk Run & Riot as the "30 Day Benders" writing a half dozen songs that would get us off to a quick start. We could have easily recorded a double album at this point but we were still in need of some studio experience and money for us to go to crazy.

Our good friend and Jam space roommate at the time Justin Becker offered to record us at 107 Boulder Crescent. Both Justin and the band were figuring things out as we went but the songs were strong and we were committed to doing the best with what we had. We ended up moving the vocal and acoustic portion of the recording to Justins Apartment, away from the loud late night shenanigans of our Jam space neighbours.

We had Garry Gonnis come in one night with two other friends Rufio and Kev to add some back up vocals on 'Through the Lenses'. Garry walked in the door with a 2-4 of PBR's and a half dozen footlongs from Subway! That was a night for the books.
Another funny story happened while we were recording 'Summer Tires'.
We needed a dejembe sound but didn't have one. In the heat of the moment we decided that putting a mic on Justins maytag dryer and playing it like a drum was the best thing. Man did it sound great

Both Sides of the Valley is a concept album of someone who leaves his/her life behind in search of a crazy spontaneous wild ride that is Banff Alberta. We did our best to chronicle the ups and downs of a life on the edge. Someone finding then loosing themselves during their time in the Bow Valley, then finally reflecting on it and trying to carve a way forward between the steep rocky mountain walls.
